Post-doctoral position, “Effects of ocean acidification on benthic communities in the Mediterranean Sea”

A 2-years post-doctoral position is available within the project eFOCE (European Free-Ocean Carbon dioxide Enrichment experiments) funded by the BNP-Paribas Foundation; http://efoce.eu/

Ocean acidification and its impacts on organisms are the subject of growing research interest. Most of the data acquired so far have been obtained through perturbation experiments in the laboratory. It is critical to perform long-term experiments in situ to assess the effects of ocean acidification on the structure and functioning of natural communities. In the framework of the eFOCE project, an in situ benthic experimental system, that allows the continuous regulation of pH in coastal areas, is currently constructed and tested to assess the effect of ocean acidification on key benthic communities of the Mediterranean Sea.

Responsibilities: The applicant will be in charge of running medium (few weeks) to long-term (several months) experiments in the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer, focusing on the effects of ocean acidification on natural benthic communities (Posidonia beds and coralligenous algae). The experiments will be carried out in close collaboration with the eFOCE partners: Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Intitute (USA), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK), Station Biologique de Roscoff (France) and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (Spain).

Requirements: A candidate with a good expertise in the functioning of benthic communities is sought. Scientific diving experience as well as a good command of written and oral English are essential.

Host laboratory: The applicant will be based at the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (Villefranche-sur-mer, France).

Duration of contract and salary: This 2-years position is expected to begin around the 1st of September 2012. The gross monthly salary is, according to the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) rules, 2500 €.
