Abstract
This project aims to inspire curiosity and scientific inquiry, this hands-on lesson allows pupils to investigate the chemical impact of ocean acidification on marine life. By modeling how acidic environments dissolve calcium carbonate shells and eggshells, pupils analyse data, connect chemical reactions to atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions, and identify practical solutions to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
Description
The children will learn to explain the concept of ocean acidification and how excess atmospheric 〖”CO” 〗_2changes ocean chemistry, to describe the chemical reaction between acids and calcium carbonate shells (“Acid”+”Carbonate”→”Carbon Dioxide”+”Water”+”Salt” ), and to conduct a fair test, gather quantitative/qualitative data, and record daily scientific observations. They will connect experimental results to real-world threats facing shell-building marine organisms (e.g., Irish mussels, oysters, and cold-water corals).
