U.S. GO-SHIP (Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program) is pleased to announce a two-year NSF-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship to foster participation in analysis and collection of data within the U.S. GO-SHIP repeat hydrography program. U.S. GO-SHIP is part of the international GO-SHIP program. GO-SHIP collects highly accurate, full water column, multiple-parameter observations on trans-oceanic sections for investigation of large-scale physical and biogeochemical oceanographic processes relevant to climate. It re-occupies these sections approximately every 10 years.
The postdoc will be employed by the institution of their U.S. GO-SHIP principal investigator supervisor during the fellowship; the fellowship will be administered to the host institution as a sub-award from the NSF U.S. GO-SHIP funding at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Incumbents may, but are not required to, serve as co-chief scientist on one leg of a U.S. GO-SHIP cruise during their fellowship. Please note the schedule is presently in flux and upcoming cruises are listed on the front page of the U.S. GO-SHIP website. Opportunities in 2024 may include A16S (~30°W Atlantic, 6°S to 60°S) and I08S (90°E in Indian Ocean, 65°S -28°S). In 2025 schedule may include as many as 3 U.S. GO-SHIP transects: I09N (90°E in Indian Ocean, from ~28°S to Thailand), possibly P16S/C (two legs, 150°W from ~67°S to 20°N) and/or P04E (Pacific 10°N Costa Rica-Honolulu last occupied in 1989). The call for the co-chief position for I08S is out now, so it would be best to apply for this position separately from the post-doctoral fellowship. Interested applicants should identify and contact a mentor or mentors from the current list of U.S. GO-SHIP principal investigators and collaborators (see blue-highlighted entries). In consultation with the chosen mentor, candidates should develop a short one-to-two-page research plan for a scientific investigation incorporating analysis of GO-SHIP data. Research must include some aspect of the core (Level 1 or 2) GO-SHIP data set. Those with particular interest in ocean carbon biogeochemistry (organic or inorganic) or biology are encouraged to apply. Proposed projects are encouraged that make use of GO-SHIP observations, whether the data were previously collected or are obtained during the period of the fellowship. Analysis and closely associated modeling or state estimation projects specifically utilizing US GO-SHIP data are also considered, as are projects which combine GO-SHIP observations with other datasets (e.g., Bio GO-SHIP, float, or drifter observations). Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in oceanography, earth sciences, applied math, or the physical, chemical, or biological sciences by the time of the appointment. Training in physical oceanography, ocean biogeochemistry, and/or climate science is preferred, along with strong quantitative, modeling, and/or statistical skills. An ability and interest to work across these disciplines is highly desirable.
The support is for 2 years plus additional coverage for time at sea as a GO-SHIP co-chief scientist. Extension through support from the postdoc mentor is also possible, but not guaranteed. Once appointed, GO-SHIP postdoc support must be used within two years of the start date, with short extensions granted for GO-SHIP time at sea. Applications will be reviewed by a committee drawn from those U.S. GO-SHIP principal investigators who have no conflict of interest with any of the applications. Phone interviews will ensue for short-listed candidates.
The deadline for applications is September 22, 2023. Those received by this date will be given priority. After this date, until the position is filled, applications will be considered in the order in which they are received. Decisions will be made by November 1, 2023.
