We are pleased to let you know about the upcoming GOA-ON’s June webinar focusing on “Biogeochemical Studies in the Tropical and South Atlantic Ocean – from air-sea CO2 exchanges to ocean acidification”, hosted by the LAOCA regional hub. The webinar will take place on 27 June 2023 at 14:00 UTC and will feature presentations by:

  • Michelle Graco (Instituto del Mar del Peru) will present the results of the main studies developed at the upwelling system of Perú focused on the oceanographic dynamics, the carbonate system and the implementation of a low-cost coastal marine observatory to monitor natural stressors and contribute to the SDG 14.
  • Thiago Monteiro (Federal University of Rio Grande, Brazil) will present some of the main studies developed by the Brazilian Ocean Acidification Network (BrOA) in the western Tropical Atlantic, in the South Atlantic and in the Antarctic Peninsula, followed by an overview of our current knowledge of carbon chemistry, from air-sea CO₂ exchanges to ocean acidification.
  • Carla Berghoff from the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development in Argentina will moderate.

Michelle Graco, Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE), Peru and REMARCO is a biologist with a PhD in Chemical Oceanography from the University of Concepción Chile and Paris VI France. She coordinates the Chemical and Geology Laboratories at the Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE) developing research associated with the Peruvian Upwelling system and in particular the Oxygen Minimum Zones (ZMO), nitrogen and carbon cycles, carbonate system and acidification, and recently developing sensors for coastal marine stressors monitoring. Michelle participates in the Latin America and the Caribbean REMARCO Research Network on Marine coastal stressors and different national and international projects.

Thiago Monteiro, Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), Brazil is an Oceanographer, MSc. and PhD in Physical, Chemical and Geological Oceanography. Currently, he is a collaborator in the CARBON Team research group, at the Laboratory for Oceans and Climate Studies (LEOC/FURG – Brazil), working with sea-air CO₂ fluxes, marine carbonate system and biogeochemistry. Thiago is a member of the project MARES, which aims to disseminate knowledge of oceanographic and Antarctic studies to civil society in general. He is mainly interested in integrated oceanographic processes.

Carla Berghoff, National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP), Mar del Plata, Argentina is a Researcher in the ‘Dynamics of Marine Plankton and Climate Change (DiPlaMCC) Program of INIDEP, which aims to study long-term changes in the physical-chemical and biological environment in the ecological time series stations EPEA, El Veril and COSTAL located in the Northern Argentine continental self. The focus of her research is to relate the temporal variability of the carbonate system and the role of phytoplankton on the regulation of air-sea gas exchange in the context of ocean acidification in different areas of the Argentine Sea, especially in the series of time EPEA, El Veril and COSTAL.
