Major Duties
Applications are invited for a full-time, 12-month, technician position based at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to support an NSF-funded research project on submarine groundwater discharge on coral reefs. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Nyssa Silbiger (nyssa.silbiger@csun.edu) and will support research conducted in California and Moorea, French Polynesia. The primary responsibilities will be supporting all aspects of the logistics required for maintaining ocean acidification mesocosm experiments and near-shore marine research in the field. The ideal candidate will have an MS in a field-based marine biology topic, experience maintaining mesocosm facilities for ocean acidification research, a background in seawater chemistry, an understanding of the biology/ecology of marine organisms, and strong experience with fieldwork (e.g., SCUBA diving, operating small boats, AAUS training, etc.). A BS/BA or four-year equivalent in a related field is required. Candidates will be expected to pay attention to detail, problem solve, work both independently and as a team, and have a strong work ethic. Additional preferred qualifications include experience coding in R.
55% Experimental support (Supports all aspects of the logistics required for maintaining ocean acidification mesocosm experiments and near-shore marine research in the field conducted by teams of students and faculty, including collecting organisms, seawater chemistry, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, boat operations, data entry, and travel to Mo’orea, French Polynesia). 20% Analysis of scientific samples. 20% Lab support (ordering, shipping, organizing paperwork, equipment maintenance). 5% Data management and analysis using the statistical program R.
Qualifications
This position requires a scuba certification.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
A Bachelor’s degree in either biology, oceanography, marine biology, ecology, environmental science or related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred. Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse team, ability to speak and write effectively, and ability to work in remote field locations in French Polynesia for up to 3 months at a time is required. Strong knowledge of marine systems (coral reef ecology highly preferred), maintaining mesocosm facilities, and using instrumentation typically used in coastal biogeochemistry research. Experience with fieldwork (e.g., SCUBA diving, operating small boats, American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) training, etc.) and basic coding in R is desired.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
This position is employed through The University Corporation (TUC). TUC offers an excellent benefits package.
The anticipated hiring maximum: $19.23 per hour.
