Call for abstracts: AGU Fall Meeting 2020 ocean acidification session

Dates: 7-11 December 2020

AGU Fall Meeting will be mostly virtual and remain the global convening meeting for the Earth and space sciences community.

Session name: The Earth System Response to Ocean Acidification

Session description: Our oceans are rapidly acidifying as carbon dioxide is pumped into the atmosphere. Past ocean acidification events in Earth’s history are recorded in deep-sea sediments and offer an unparalleled view into the full range of geochemical and biotic responses to elevated levels of CO2 injection. Recent hypotheses suggest that, in addition to changes in chemical weathering of silicate rocks on land, reduced biogenic calcification and altered ocean ecosystem functioning may also play an important role in mitigating acidification. This session aims to advance our understanding of the connections between chemical and biotic feedbacks during intervals of altered marine carbon cycle dynamics. We invite submissions that focus on any aspect of the Earth system response to ocean acidification in the past, present, and future, including processes on scales ranging from cellular responses (e.g., calcification) to global biogeochemical changes. Past reconstructions that utilize proxies and/or modeling components are also welcome.

Deadline for submitting abstracts: 29 July 2020
