Postdoc position: biogeochemical modeling in the Gulf of Alaska

Position Summary:

The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is recruiting a Post Doctoral Fellow to join the exciting and research oriented Biogeochemical Modeling and Ocean Acidification Team. The International Arctic Research Center supports Arctic research, coordination and communication to help the nation and the world understand, prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change in the Arctic and beyond. The collaborative and inclusive environment at the International Arctic Research Center and within Alaska’s EPSCoR project “Fire and Ice”, which funds this position, will create opportunities to establish a career building and interdisciplinary science network.


Conduct regional biogeochemical modeling in the Gulf of Alaska. Under the guidance of Dr. Claudine Hauri, analyze a ~40 year long regional ocean-biogeochemical hindcast simulation to study the influence of freshwater and large-scale climate drivers on the inorganic carbon and nutrient dynamics, and coastal ecosystem as a whole. The work will also include improvement of the biogeochemical model based on new field observations from the project. This position will involve biogeochemical modeling, data-model comparison, model output analysis, and publishing.

Ability to publish in peer reviewed journals and be able to conduct multidisciplinary research.

Ability to pay close attention to detail, and work in an organized manner.

Ability to follow instructions and work without close supervision.

Sufficient relevant experience to contribute significantly to projects.

Experience with the use of programming languages and computer analysis programs such as matlab and python and other appropriate equipment to conduct the research proposed.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Required Education and Experience:

PhD degree in oceanography or a related field and 2 years of research in a relevant scientific field.
