AUGUSTA, Maine — A group of environmentalists, academics and state leaders are hosting an event in the state’s capital city to discuss approaches to ocean pollution in Maine.
The event will be held at the State House Legislative Council Room in Augusta on Tuesday and will focus on ocean acidification.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has described ocean acidification as change to the ocean’s chemistry over an extended period of time due mostly to uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Organizers of Tuesday’s event say the Gulf of Maine is “uniquely susceptible” to ocean acidification. They cite the importance of the state’s fishing industry as a key reason why Maine has to take ocean acidification seriously.
The event will be hosted by Maine Ocean and Coastal Acidification Partnership and others.
