Senator Brian Hatfield of Raymond released a statement following the executive order signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire ordering the use of state resources to combat rising levels of ocean acidity:
“The shellfish industry means thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to Washington in general and Pacific County in particular. Willapa Bay is one of the world’s leaders in shellfish production, and without the actions of the governor and the Department of Ecology, that industry faces a serious threat. I congratulate and thank Gov. Gregoire for her actions and look forward to working with her, Gov.-elect Inslee and the department on finding a solution to this problem.”
Gregoire announced her executive order on Tuesday, saying she plans to reallocate $3.3 million to fund priority actions on acidification.
