Deadline: 20 October 2021
Ref.: 30072103
About the position
A three-year PhD fellowship is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA), Nord University (Bodø, Norway), connected to the Molecular Ecology research group. The project will be led by Prof. Dr. Galice Hoarau, in collaboration with Dr. Katja Peijnenburg from Naturalis Biodiversity Center in the Netherlands.
Shelled pteropods, a group of holoplanktonic gastropods are used as bio-indicators to monitor impacts of ocean acidification. This project will focus on population genomics of the pteropod Limacina helicina, a widely distributed and highly abundant species in polar and subpolar regions. This project will focus across their entire geographic distribution on: 1) phenotypic and genomic variation, 2) spatial partitioning of variation in relation to oceanographic variables, 3) relative importance of neutral and adaptive processes in shaping this variation.
The position will be available from 1st of January 2022.
Qualification requirements
Essential:
- MSc degree (to be completed before the start of the position) or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as molecular ecology, ecological genomics, population genetics or related disciplines.
- Grade average of B or better both for the programme in total and the master’s thesis
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Drylab skills in molecular biology (e.g. DNA extraction, PCR)
- Strong computational skills (using R or Python, Population genetics analyses, bioinformatics analyses, and other relevant programmes)
- Demonstration of strong interest in and drive to work on the topic
- Ability to work independently and in teams
- High motivation and adherence to time lines
Beneficial:
- Experience in biological oceanography / plankton ecology
- Experience with pteropods / morphometrics
The faculty is international with English as a common working language. Applicants who already have a PhD in life sciences are not eligible.
The successful candidate will join the PhD program at Nord University and is expected to complete the study within the period. For admission requirements and regulations, see our web page.
