Position Summary:

The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (.75 FTE), 12-month, Tenure Track (Annual) Assistant or Associate Professor Ecosystem Oceanographer position.This new position is for an Ecosystem Oceanographer who will take full advantage of unique OSU and NOAA resources and collaborative opportunities at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon.The successful applicant will have the necessary expertise to examine the role of physical and biogeochemical ocean processes in population dynamics, recruitment, survival, and adaptation of managed and protected marine species. This position is co-sponsored by the NOAA Estuarine and Ocean Ecology (EOE) program and will have the academic home in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) of Oregon State University. This position will also receive support during the first 5 years from the Marine Studies Initiative. For academic-track positions, it is CEOAS policy to hire as a 12-month, 0.75 FTE (equivalent to the traditional 9-month 1.0 FTE) and confer indefinite tenure when promoted to Associate Professor.

The selected candidate will be expected to (see Position Duties):

a) Conduct and maintain nationally and internationally recognized research activities, b) Teach graduate and undergraduate courses commensurate with the teaching responsibilities and within their area of expertise,
c) Mentor undergraduate, graduate students, and post-docs, and
d) Conduct service activities to the participating institutions and profession.

The primary research focus for this position is understanding how interactions between physical, biological, and chemical processes shape the response of the coastal marine ecosystems, and adaptations of marine organisms, from planktonic to mid- and higher trophic level species (e.g., forage fish and apex predators). This position will focus on developing and implementing state-of-the-art physical, chemical and biogeochemical models and capabilities, to investigate species of the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem, with applicability to other systems and species. The candidate will collaborate with colleagues from relevant disciplines to generate new mechanistic insights for how ocean change – such as deoxygenation, acidification, and marine heat waves – affect the distribution, population dynamics and adaptive capacity of commercially, culturally, and ecologically important species. Modelling frameworks that will be developed and used for this research will be widely applicable and will enable marine scientists to help inform management scenarios, decision-making, and adaptation strategies that reduce risks and increase marine resource resilience to ocean change.

Examples of these modelling frameworks include the development of high-resolution coupled physical-biogeochemical simulations at spatial scales appropriate for

1) Evaluating potential coastal upwelling changes on marine organisms along the west coast of the U.S.,
2) Investigating the progression of coastal ocean acidification and hypoxia,
3) Describing the formation and persistence of biological “hotspots” in response to localized small prey (e.g., euphausiid) aggregations, and
4) Examining adaptive capacity of marine organisms via genetic adaptation and phenotypic plasticity.

The selected candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and will mentor a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in research and management.
