Ocean acidification has widespread effects on the health, biodiversity and productivity of marine ecosystems and ultimately impacts on human livelihoods and wellbeing. There is an urgent need for international collaboration to promote mitigation of and adaptation to these stressors in policy, regulations and funding streams. This event will illustrate what actions can and are being taken to meet the ongoing ocean acidification challenge.

Hear from government leaders in the Pacific Region who are advancing tangible actions that protect coastal communities from the local and regional impacts of ocean acidification (OA.)

• Collaboration through the New Zealand Pacific Partnership on OA.
• National government approaches to developing OA Action Plans or
related measures in New Zealand, Fiji and Tokelau.
• International cooperation on OA, including through Commonwealth
Blue Charter and the OA Alliance.
• How taking national or regional actions on OA further supports ocean
and climate commitments under existing frameworks like UN SDG 14,
UNFCCC, UN Decade of Ocean Science and the Ocean Pathways
Partnership.

Activities of global networks that are working to advance science and monitoring, increase capacity and raise awareness about ocean acidification and other climate related changing ocean conditions.

Regional hubs in the Pacific Region, Latin American and Africa that are working
to increase understanding of potential impacts and trends of ocean acidification
and hypoxia locally and communicate knowledge across coastal communities.

Initiatives like the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification that are engaging policy makers to advance tangible actions in response to this growing threat.
