Vacant post doctoral position – chemical oceanography, trends in ocean acidification carbonate chemistry in Norwegian and polar waters

Final date for applications: August 24th 2016!

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has available a 2 year position (with an option for 2 years extension), a postdoctoral related to studies of variations, drivers, and trends of ocean acidification and carbon chemistry in Norwegian waters and in the Arctic Ocean. The position is placed in the research group Oceanography and Climate. Work will start as soon as possible, and the position will be located in Tromsø.

The position will form a part of the institute’s research on monitoring of ocean acidification and chemical analyzes of the marine carbonate system which started in 2011. Since 2011 IMR lead several projects in Norwegian waters and in the Arctic, including the flagship program “Ocean Acidification and effects in northern waters” within thee FRAM-High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment, and the Norwegian Environment Agency program for ocean acidification monitoring. IMR will expand our existing scientific knowledge base of natural and anthropogenic variations in marine chemistry focusing on carbonate chemistry and biogeochemical processes that drive seasonal and interannual variations in carbonate chemistry. This is to gain knowledge about trends in ocean acidification in Norwegian waters and evaluate the effects of acidification on ecosystems. The knowledge generated in this project will be of importance to the advice given about biological effects of acidification and management of ecosystems.

The successful candidate will work in a dynamic group of scientists and technicians focusing on marine chemistry and ocean acidification monitoring. The candidate is expected to contribute mainly with data collection, interpretation, reporting and publication of data from ocean acidification monitoring. The candidate must also participate in cruises and analyze samples in the laboratory for carbonate chemistry at IMR. The group has large international and national networks that the candidate is expected to collaborate with and further develop.

The requirements for the position are as follows, where the candidate must have:

  • PhD in chemical oceanography, marine chemistry or equivalent.
  • Experience with the use of instrumentation such as VINDTA or equivalent equipment for analyzing the marine carbonate system.
  • Good understanding of marine carbonate chemistry and drivers in this system.
  • Ability to present scientific results orally and in writing in English.

In addition, the candidate should have:

  • Experience in ODV and/or Matlab, software for analysis of chemical data.
  • Experience from field work.
  • Experience with data reporting.
  • Willingness to work interdisciplinary with biological and physical research questions linked to the carbon system.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to work in a team and to work independently.
  • It is expected that the candidate will publish the results in reports and international journals and participate in relevant conferences and workshops.

IMR offers a stimulating work environment that is highly involved in the relevant issues in our capacity as national advisor. The department generally has a good working environment, we offer flexible working hours and have good pension and welfare systems.

Remuneration will be subject to postdoctoral schedule 1352. For more information, please contact the research group leader Jan Erik Stiansen(jan.erik.stiansen(at)imr.no) or visit our website, http://www.imr.no.

IMR is an “Including Working Life Enterprise” concerned with diversity and therefore encourages all qualified candidates to apply. Please note that information about applicants may be made public even if an applicant has requested to be exempted from the list of applicants. Applicants will be notified about this in advance.

The application must include:

  • A letter with description of relevant competences and motivation to apply for this position
  • Complete CV (work experience, education, list of publications)
  • Name of three references with phone number, postal address and e-mail address
  • Certificates for education including PhD

The complete application must be submitted electronically via the link on this page. The text must be in English or Norwegian.
