OA-ICC December calendar: 29/12- “Living La Vida LAOCA!”

Count down the days until 2015 together with the OA-ICC! Each day of December you will find a short story on the OA-ICC news stream highlighting an ocean acidification project, effort, or resource.

No, not a typo but LAOCA the ‘Latin American Workshop on Ocean acidification’! The workshop, which took place on the 9th to the 16th of November 2014 in Chile focused on measurement and manipulation of carbonate chemistry, biological impacts and human dimensions of ocean acidification.

Organised by the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, the Center for the Study of Multiple Drivers on Marine-Ecological Systems and the OA-ICC, the workshop was held at the biological marine station of the University of Conception in Dichato, Chile. The workshop aimed to support capacity building for Latin American researchers and to facilitate a network of researchers to share information and create a standardization of research techniques. During the week a theoretical study of sea chemistry was followed by experimental work on a mesocosm system for pH (CO2) manipulation which was designed to recreate future ocean conditions in 50 to 100 years. The week ended with an open to the public symposium on “Ocean acidification: The new threat to marine ecosystems”.

Another South American activity on ocean acidification is the Brazilian Research Group on Ocean Acidification (BROA) which was created by the International Geosphere – Biosphere Programme (IGBP), University of São Paulo (USP), Council of Scientific Research and Development of Brazil (CNPq) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The group’s short term goal is to integrate Brazilian researchers in a wide national network of interdisciplinary cooperation and to contribute to international programs. In terms of research the group monitors water chemistry and its impacts on key biogeochemical parameters in coastal and estuarine ecosystem.
