Postdoctoral position in ocean carbon cycle at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary centre for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for the following position: 1 Scientist/Postdoc (m/f – 2011-25). The applicant will be part of the Research Group Ocean Biogeochemistry in the Department The Ocean in the Earth System. The candidate will be involved in the current research activities of the group, such as investigating climate – carbon cycle feedbacks, ocean acidification, the future evolution of the oceanic carbon sinks, and interactions with other components of the Earth System. The research will contribute to the evaluation of CMIP5 experiments; the main tool will be the existing Earth system model of the MPI-M, which includes the ocean biogeochemistry model HAMOCC.

We are looking for a scientist with a Ph.D. in Geosciences, Oceanography, Environmental Sciences, or a related field. Previous experience with ocean carbon cycle models and ideally also with Earth system models is of advantage. Programming skills (FORTRAN on Unix platforms) and expertise in model output analysis are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work efficiently in a team are required. The position is available immediately. The position will initially be offered for one year with a possibility of extension. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions up to TVöD E13, including extensive social security plans.
