Phytoplankton Physiology Technician

Salary £21021 per annum [pro-rata]

The Academic Unit of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton, is seeking to recruit a Phytoplankton Physiology Technician to assist with an experiment to test the effect of carbonate chemistry and nutrient availability on coccolithophore physiology.

The successful applicant will undertake the technical support required to conduct an experiment for six months, including high quality carbonate chemistry measurements (dissolve inorganic carbon, total alkalinity and pH) in seawater samples from phytoplankton cultures.

You will have a relevant NVQ2/GCSE/City and Guilds or equivalent and ideally a degree in Biology or Chemistry. Experience in culturing coccolithophores, measurements of carbonate chemistry and knowledge of phytoplankton physiology is essential. You must be able to work independently in a reliable manner and co-operatively as part of a larger team.

The post is a part-time fixed term appointment commencing June 2011 for a period of 6 months.
