Session: Ocean acidification and foraminifera: Altered ecology and physiology in a High CO2 World

FORAMS 2010**
International Symposium on Foraminifera
**
*September 5 – 10, 2010
Bonn, Germany

There is growing scientific and public concern over altered ocean carbonate chemistry caused by ongoing uptake of anthropogenic atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and its effect on marine organisms, biodiversity, biogeochemistry, habitats and ecosystems. Contrary to corals- and coccolithophore-centered research, the effects of altered carbonate chemistry on foraminiferal calcification, ecology, and physiology have only recently begun. This session seeks to highlight this relatively new field in foraminiferal research by inviting contributions on topics that include, but are not limited to, studies predicting future responses on levels ranging from subcellular processes to ecosystem responses. Integrative presentations involving field, such as natural out-gassing CO2 systems, and laboratory approaches are particularly welcomed, as are studies of past records of ocean acidification. The session will promote the exchange of ideas and methodologies by combining geochemical, biological, and/or (paleo)ecological approaches.
