Webinar: The development and validation of a profiling glider pH sensor for high resolution observations of coastal and ocean acidification

When: Tue, Mar 5, 2019 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM CET

Description: Coastal acidification alters the oceanic carbonate system, increasing potential for ecological, economic, and cultural losses. Traditional acidification monitoring efforts are limited in spatial and depth resolution and in economically and ecologically important regions such as the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB). During this webinar, Elizabeth Wright-Fairbanks of Rutgers University, will focus on a recent and ongoing collaborative project that has developed the first integrated underwater profiling glider platform and sensor system for sampling carbonate chemistry throughout the water column of the coastal ocean. The results presented will demonstrate the ability for gliders to routinely provide high resolution water column data on regional scales that can be applied to acidification monitoring efforts in other coastal regions.

Ce colloque s’appuiera sur les expériences de terrain et sur les résultats des projets scientifiques financés par le ministère chargé de l’environnement dans le cadre du programme “Acidification des océans“.

The Call for Abstracts has been announced for the 2019 CERF conference on Nov. 3-7 in Mobile, AL.

Deadline for abstracts: Wednesday, 1 May, 2019.

Ocean and coastal acidification: rationales and insights from place-based collaboration.

Session Description: Ocean and coastal acidification is an emerging and complex topic which will require similarly complex solutions. This session focuses on collaboration efforts between federal, state, local, industry and academic entities to help monitor, understand, predict, and adapt to ocean and coastal acidification. The coordination and benefits of local or regional collaborations as well as the scientific rationales for working at these scales are appropriate topics for presentations.

Ocean acidification in a multiple-climate-change-stressors context: science­-based tools for management

Session Description: Global climate change is shifting and intensifying natural gradients and variability related to warming, ocean acidification (OA), and hypoxia, with potential consequences for species distributions and trophic interactions (including harmful algal blooms) that can ultimately restructure ecosystems. In coastal waters, increasing OA, heat waves, and hypoxia can be exacerbated by anthropogenic nutrients and carbon inputs. This session will explore investigations of how local multiple drivers impact marine organisms through observations, experiments and modeling, and how these tools can be used collectively to support local pollution impact and marine vulnerability assessments and investigations of effective adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Call for abstracts: IAPSO 2019 coastal ocean acidification session

Abstract deadline: 18 February 2019

Conference: The International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO) 2019

Location: Montreal, Canada

Dates: 10-14 July 2019

Session description: P08 – Coastal Ocean Acidification: Ocean acidification (OA) is causing complex biogeochemical changes over a range of temporal and spatial scales. It can be extremely difficult to understand OA in the highly complex coastal zone. However, this rapidly emerging scientific issue has raised serious concerns across the scientific and resource management communities as to its possible impacts on highly productive coastal fisheries and food webs. This symposium will highlight new research in coastal acidification, including changes in biogeochemistry; complexities associated with other ocean processes (e.g., freshwater mixing; hypoxia; multiple stressors); impacts on ecosystems and economies; and modeling and projection of future OA.

The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) will be holding its 4th International Workshop in Hangzhou, China, on 14-17 April 2019, to be hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED) and the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration. This workshop will bring together scientists from around the world to discuss emerging aspects from the coupled effects of ocean acidification with multi-stressors, review global ocean acidification status and forecast capabilities, and explore opportunities for capacity development.

The deadline for abstracts is 31 January 2019.
