Postdoctoral scientist position in biogeochemical modelling, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Kiel, Germany

Deadline for applications: 25 November 2016!

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 72 million Euro and has approx. 950 employees.

The research unit “Biogeochemical Modelling” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry”, is inviting applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral Scientist Position as part of the ComparCE project of the DFG-funded Priority Program 1689 on the Assessment of Climate Engineering.

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in Earth system modelling and model assessment. The research project will focus on the selection of indicators and development of metrics to assess a number of climate engineering ideas (such as afforestation, ocean alkalinisation, solar radiation management,…) in the context of mitigation. Tools will be developed and tested on the basis of model simulations of various climate engineering scenarios employing new and already existing runs of intermediate complexity (UVic) and complex Earth system (MPI-ESM) models. Metric development will account for model uncertainties (e.g. by analysing perturbed parameter ensembles) and include collaboration with scientists from other disciplines engaged in the Priority Program, such as social sciences, international law and ethics, and some readiness to engage in interdisciplinary work is required.

We are looking for a creative and ambitious earth scientist with a PhD in a natural sciences subject, very strong expertise in the analysis of numerical models of the earth system, and a strong background in climate science.

The position is limited to 3 years with a start date as soon as possible. Salary and social benefits are according to Germany’s public sector TVöD 13 scale. This is a full-time position. The position can be split.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply. GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Please send your applications with a CV, list of publications, addresses of two referees, and a brief statement of your research interests by November 25, 2016 under the keyword “Climate Engineering Assessment” in a single pdf-file to bewerbung(at)geomar.de, or mail it to the following address:
