OA-ICC updates in the SOLAS Newsletter

Since its establishment under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2012, the OA-ICC has been communicating, promoting and facilitating a series of global activities on ocean acidification.

With regards to science, the OA-ICC continues to support the development of a Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON; http://www.goa-on.org), in particular by encouraging the participation of developing countries. The GOA-ON science plan was recently printed and copies are available on request. The OA-ICC organised 1) an expert meeting with scientists and data managers from ten countries aiming at enhancing international OA data sharing (Monaco, 23-24 April 2014; http://tinyurl.com/EOS-OA2014) and co-organised with the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM) the 3rd international workshop of the socio-economic impacts of ocean acidification (Monaco, 12-14 January 2015). We also co-supported the expert meeting ‘Oceans 2015
initiative’, 20-22 April in Monaco, with the goal to translate greenhouse gas emissions trajectories into an impact scenario for ocean acidification and warming. The OA-ICC offers two online databases related to ocean acidification: a bibliographic database and a data compilation on the biological response to ocean acidification.

With regard to capacity building, the OA-ICC organised two regional training courses together with local partners in 2014 (Mediterranean and Latin America).

With regard to communication, the OA-ICC provides daily updates on ocean acidification through its news stream and runs a regularly updated website with multiple resources on ocean acidification grouped according to language and type of audience (scientists, policy makers, schools, the general public). The OA-ICC was present at the UNFCCC COP20 in Lima, December 2014 and the 16th session of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, New York, 6-10 April 2015.
