COP20 (08/12/14) – Turley explains that ocean acidification is occurring at the fastest rate ever in Earth’s history with significant impacts on marine organisms. As 1 billion people depend on marine protein as a main protein source and engage in aquaculture for their livelihoods, adaptation is an important issue.
Oceans are at the forefront of climate change absorbing over 90% of heat energy and 30% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Turley believes oceans are not getting enough attention in the UNFCCC process and wants to make the topic of oceans more visible at COP20. She is concerned about populations who depend on oceans for food and livelihoods and is interested in finding adaptation solutions to current and future levels of ocean acidification and warming.
