Postdoctoral position available at WHOI: integrated natural/social science modeling

The Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA USA is searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator in the field of integrated natural-social science modeling to join their team. The initial appointment will be for one year with the potential to be extended for up to three years maximum. This position is eligible for benefits.

JOB SUMMARY:

The project involves developing an integrated assessment model for the commercial sea scallop fishery in the northeastern United States that incorporates biogeochemical, population, and economic submodels. Realistic biogeochemical and fishery stressors such as ocean acidification, climate change, and harvest pressure changes will be included in the models. The project will also develop a web-based decision support tool for policy makers to explore the consequences of different specific policy decisions on regional ocean biogeochemistry, sea scallop populations, and human behavior.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in numerical oceanographic, fisheries, or economic modeling. Familiarity with command-line programming (especially Python, Matlab, Fortran, or similar) is required.

Candidates with experience developing web-based science outreach products are especially encouraged to apply.

EDUCATION DESIRED:

Ph.D in chemical oceanography/marine biogeochemistry or fisheries modeling/economics.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to ability to view a PC, ability to hear in a lab setting. This is a mostly sedentary position with occasional walking/standing. This position is located in a chemistry department. Hazardous substances are in the vicinity but not in this lab. Physical duties are subject to change.
