A position as postdoctoral fellow in earth system modelling is available (under usual reserve of available funding) at the Geophysical Institute in association with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is financed by the European Commission through projects “EPOCA” and “COMBINE”.
The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term post, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is 2 years. It is not possible for any person to work under more than one temporary appointment as postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.
The Geophysical Institute carries out research and provides education in meteorology, climate, physical and dynamical oceanography and chemical oceanography. The department currently has 16 permanent scientific positions and 10 technical/administrative positions. In addition, there are 6 adjunct professors and around 50 PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and full-time researchers. The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR – http://www.bjerknes.uib.no) is a joint climate research venture between the University of Bergen (UiB), the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) and Uni Research AS. The BCCR integrates observationalists and modellers in a concerted interdisciplinary research effort. The BCCR comprises the largest climate research group in Norway and is awarded status as a national Centre of Excellence by the Research Council of Norway.
The candidate will work within the projects “EPOCA” and “COMBINE” with coupled earth system models. Tasks include the performing and evaluation of future scenarios concerning the development and impact of ocean acidification (“EPOCA”) and advanced diagnostics of Earth system runs with respect to observations from all relevant earth system reservoirs.
Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate in oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics or related disciplines, or must have achieved equivalent education abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for the application. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
Scientific requirements for the position are an interest in interdisciplinary earth system science and relevant experience in at least one of the following fields: climate dynamics, geophysical fluid dynamics, carbon cycle biogeochemistry, and numerical mathematics. Technical qualifications include excellent knowledge of the programming language FORTRAN, as well as experience with the operating system UNIX, the development of complex software packages, and analysis of large data sets. Experience with climate models and coupling procedures is important. The successful candidate will work in a lively research environment, must have good team working skills, and the ability to pursue a scientific career in geosciences or computational science.

Initial salaries at grade 57 (code 1352/pay framework 24.1) in the Civil Service pay grade table; currently NOK 438,700 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations
(wage range 57–64). In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered.
